If your whole Xbox or the DVD drive has died altogether and you have a game or movie
trapped in the tray, you can usually open it manually by poking a straightened out paper
power/eject buttons. One of the larger size paper clips works best.
There's really no way to describe exactly how to do this, but you feel around for
something plastic, that's even with, and fairly close to the hole (you can feel it moving
when your push on it). Then you push on it over and over. What you're doing is manually
spinning the gear that releases the tray. Once it comes open about an inch you can very
easily pull it the rest of the way out. DON'T FORCE IT.
For Samsung drives you only have to push once but you have to push pretty hard, it's
more of a latch mechanism.
If you have a Phillips drive you'll hit metal when you put the paper clip in that hole so you
use an alternate hole directly underneath the tray and under the last X in Xbox.
The above instructions are for a dead Xbox or drive, not one that has a broken tray. If the
gear itself is broken then spinning it probably won't work, but it doesn't hurt to try. The
tray mechanism is actually pretty hard to break. Someone would have had to pry on the
tray to get it open, yanked on it very hard, or stepped on it. If anything like that occurred
you'll need to replace the whole DVD drive to fix it. FYI, I've included instructions in the
DVD drive replacement kit to get your disc out of the old drive when you're done installing
the new one. It's easy to do once the old drive is out of the console, and it doesn't matter
how messed up it is.
If your Xbox appears to work fine except for the tray not opening there may be a cheap
and easy fix. The tray gear mechanism uses a rubber band to connect the motor to the
gears. It can get stretched out over time or even degrade and snap, especially if you have
an ionizing air purifier around. Most often they just get too far stretched out to grab the
motor pulley well enough to get past the magnets that hold the disc in place. To check for
over-stretching just open the tray manually with a paper clip as shown above and load a
game. If it plays fine and ejects normally but then the tray won't open again when it's
empty, chances are a better rubber band will do the trick. Actual Xbox drive rubber bands
are getting hard to come by so I suggest trying whatever similar sized rubber band you
can find. There's nothing special about them, and the only requirement of a new one is
that it's not so small that it puts excessive tension on the pulleys. If you want to give this
a shot there are pretty decent instructions on getting the DVD drive out here. If you want
to know what brand of drive you have before you start you can tell by looking at the disc
tray:-
